Austin Garber, Timberville town manager, reports that Walmart has purchased and is planning to develop land on South Main St. by American Legion Dr.
Will the town of Timberville lay out a welcome mat for the new Walmart? Some of the concerns about bringing the Supercentere to Timberville include the impact on small business, the impact of increased traffic, and the loss of a small town feel. On the inverse, some people look forward to the convenience and prices that Walmart offers. Walmart will also bring approximately 300 jobs to the area. Town Manager, Austin Garber informed me of the progress on August 11th, 2015: "The rezoning was approved last year and the site plan was approved several months ago. The only item required by the town, prior to the start of construction, is the issuance of the zoning permit. I am meeting with the Walmart representatives today at 1:00 for a pre-construction meeting and anticipate receiving the zoning permit application at that time. Once Walmart receives their zoning permit then they can approach Rockingham County for their building permits." Walmart's senior manager of communication states: “We can confirm that we filed a plan with the town, and we look forward to working with the town to obtain the necessary approvals to move the project forward. Our store would provide our customers with both general merchandise and fresh food close to where they live and work, while creating approximately 300 jobs and additional tax revenue for the town. The proposed store would be a 128,000 square foot Supercentere located along Main Street.”
